The genus Capsicum consists of approximately 25 species, five of which are domesticated: C. annuum, C. baccatum, C. chinense, C. frutescens, and C. pubescens. It’s a rich family of fruits which have mesmerized humans since ancient times. Even today you have groups of collectors and enthusiast that are hot to collect, eat, share and trade their home cultivars. All the different domesticated species have their own characteristics. The annuums can be sweet while the chinense hold some of the hottest numbers on the planet. The infamously popular Aji’s are the baccatum while the Tobascos are frutescens.
